A Look at Baby Hair Accessories

Baby hair accessories are many and varied, and usually depend on your choice as a parent. Some people will not adorn their baby’s hair, and it’s not for any particular reason other than that they don’t find it necessary. Others want to make sure that baby’s head is always adorned with a flower or cartoon of some sort and they will choose hair accessories when they shop for baby.

It’s good to know what basic standards baby hair accessories should meet. Here are some of them:

  1. Always make sure that the accessories fit loosely. Baby’s head is still very delicate and any tight fitting things can cause them harm.
  2. Baby’s hair is usually soft and delicate. Choose baby hair accessories that will be kind to both hair and scalp – they should not stress them in any way. This is important especially with things like headbands; always choose breathable fabric.
  3. Choose safe materials. Metal is not safe and neither is plastic. Whatever the hard parts are made of, they must be covered in soft cloth and be fluffy so they do not get in contact with baby’s head.
  4. Choose baby hair accessories that cannot be swallowed, especially if you are buying for a toddler.
  5. Brand matters. There are some brands which are reputable for baby hair accessories. They make them strong so that they will not pull apart fast. They also make them from materials that are safe. Go for these if you can. Baby hair accessories are always cute and you may be tempted to buy one at the spur of the moment that’s not from a good brand. Remember that it may do your baby more harm than good.
  6. As much as possible, combine beauty and function. Buy accessories that keep hair in place and also look good.

There are many types of baby hair accessories, but lets have a quick look at the common ones:

Hats

This is by far the most important hair accessory you can get for your little one. Hats are multifunctional but they can also be really beautiful. A hat will keep your baby warm in cold weather and keep them cool in hot weather. They will also keep hair in place on windy days. Caps fall under this category too.

Look for fabric that’s kind to baby: wool and cotton are recommended. On hot days, if your baby is outdoors, a cap is preferable to a cotton hat as it allows circulation of air. When they are indoors, take their hats and caps off for their scalps to get a breather.

Baby Headbands

They are also a very common baby hair accessory. They are usually made of elastic covered in soft material like cotton or satin. Make sure that the fabric over the elastic is sturdy so that the elastic does not reach baby’s hair and pull it. Also, don’t leave a headband on all the time – baby’s scalp needs to breath.

Baby Barrettes

These are small plastic clips and come in many colors. They are designed to take just a little hair and then snap into place. They tend to stay secure. They are usually made of plastic which means that care should be taken when using them. You will also find bobby pins, and these too require extra caution when using. With both, make sure not to pull single strands of hair when fastening.

Hair Elastics

They are very popular and many babies use them. They are thin bands, made of elastic but in such a way that they will not pull at baby’s hair. They will usually have attachments of cartoons or flowers on. Throw out old ones as the elastic inside may get exposed.

When talking about baby hair accessories, it’s hard not to talk about tiaras for those special occasions. They have sharp ends and are not always made of the finest plastic. If you are going to be using one, go for the best you can get and once the special occasion is over, take it off and put it away.
