Baby Furniture Dressers: Things to Consider Before You Buy

Even before babies are born, when we are preparing for them, we realize that they require a lot. They will have lots of clothes, toys, diapers and other odds and ends. You want your nursery to be as neat and tidy as it could possibly be, because that makes it a safe place. Your only option is to look at baby furniture dressers.

They come in many designs and colors and variations, but there are some things that you can use to measure what will work and what wont. The overall thing is to keep it simple – a very elaborate dresser will probably stifle that otherwise wonderfully done nursery. This is not all though. Baby furniture dressers need more careful consideration than just how simple they are:

  1. Does it require you to assemble it yourself? That’s not a very good idea. In the first place it will take up your time and the pieces may be heavy. Secondly, there are chances, unless you are a baby furniture dresser expert that you may not assemble it properly and accidents could happen. Get a piece that’s already been put together. There are a lot of furniture pieces that have to be assembled today – you get separate board pieces that you put together. Granted, they are probably cheaper than something that was fully assembled at a carpentry workshop, but if you can, avoid them for baby dressers. If you can’t, get the sturdiest that there is.

You may want to use the top of the baby furniture dresser as a changing area. If you do, all the more reason for it to be a strong dresser. And remember too that in less than a year, your baby will start to move around. Get something that they can’t topple over.

  1. Look at the baby products and items that went into making the dresser. There are many materials in the market today that are made from toxic materials. You need to know what kind of materials have gone into making the dresser you are looking at buying. It helps to know where it was made too – some countries are less scrupulous and do not observe standards very keenly. All paint and coatings should be checked in advance. There are safety standards in place today to ensure all this, but only buying from an authorized dealer will assure you that these have been observed.
  2. Many baby furniture dressers come with handles. Check to make sure that the handles are not sticking out. When baby starts to move around, you don’t want them hurting themselves on a dresser handle. Also check to see that doors swing back shut by themselves. Many accidents have happen with babies running into open dresser doors. The drawers should have a kind of safety catch – it won’t be long before baby is investigating them to find what’s inside.

Lastly, choose baby furniture dressers that are not going to stuff baby’s room. Babies need space and light and clutter will not be a good idea. Remember the whole idea of getting a dresser is to declutter. If you already have a dresser and you realize that you need to store more, look into other fun storage ideas.
